Task four - Interpretation

I'm doing my task four on the designer Dan Mumford. The work he designs is illustration and digital effects. He is a designer for bands such as A Day To Remember and Parkway Drive. He creates album art and t-shirt art and designs. All his works are quite similar and have the same basic layout and effect. The art he produces is very linear and wavy. Typography is hardly used as he creates images not logo layouts etc. The bands name is placed over the image he creates.

The work he creates could also be under the grunge genre as the work is messy but I feel its more places under the digital effects category as he produces the work on a digital platform after drawing them.

He focuses his art work on the use of lines and how it all flows together.Image 2Image 6
Creating the wavy effects you see commonly in his works
His works are always hand drawn and hand rendered as he quotes "Q: How do you make your work??
A: With pencils, pens, and the wonders of photoshop. All my work is either hand rendered or created with the use of a tablet." So he uses the illustrative and digital effects styles to produce his work.

Comparison

Comparison

Corporate Branding vs Illustration

Differences:

Colour: Colour tones are different as illustrative colours are genuinely flat and basic while corporate branding colours are striking and bold.

Main Image: Corporate branding uses mostly typography or a single image where as illustration generally has a page filled with detail and is narrative to a story.

Space: Corporate branding fills its space with the typography or image of the logo or advertisement shown and illustrative fills its space with drawings and images.

Influences: Illustration is influenced by the author of a book they are illustrating or influenced by the means in which they are to illustrate while corporate branding is influenced by a client to make a logo or advertising feature on a product.

Layout: Layouts of illustration are usually spread out along a page or design work while corporate branding is usually always centered.

Composition: the main image will be placed on a white background for both styles but with illustration the background is plain and almost always white creating a large negative space for the illustration while with corporate branding the background is mostly taken up leaving no room for that negative space that could be there.

Typography: Illustration uses no typography as the drawing will be used as a narrative and corporate branding uses typography in the main image.

Techniques: Corporate branding is mainly created by technology such as computers with software to create images and logos where as illustration is used with pencils and pens and paints.

Similarities:

Main image: Both styles use a main image to convey a message.
Colour: Colours used in both styles can be the same as it can give more details.
Space: Space is filled primarily with both styles, creating less room for negative space.

Grunge/handamde

Grunge/ Handmade

Colours used in the grunge/handmade style are predominately browns, greens and greys in dark or earthy tones. These give the artwork created a natural look. Woods are also used to create borders and frames to hold the work.
Dirty colours and messy effects is how handmade is usually portrayed.
The effects show natural ideas and basic yet very nice designs.

Main images are usually photos or hand drawn images of people in every day life or nature and landscapes showing beauty etc.
Messy works is the first thing grunge is known for. Also black and white is predominant in grunge art work.

Grunge/handmade is a messy work using mostly paints or photography styles.

Pre-Digital Design

Pre-Digital Design

Pre-Digital design is a design style used before digital technology was used to create artwork and other things such as posters advertising or book covers etc.
Colours are bleak and bland as experimental bright colours weren't in effect as they are today.
Hand drawn images and typography are main features along with the dull colours used.
Paint printing could also be used to show work design as they are a good way to be eye catching with the colours used. It was also easier to get an image portrayed and conveyed on the work used.
Main images used are primarily people and animals. They stand out from the monotonous backgrounds as they will be different colours.
Text types are basic and easily read and their colours standout easily from the background as the colours contrast significantly.

Corporate Branding

Corporate Branding

Corporate Branding is a design work that is used for logos and advertisement items. Corporate Branding relies on bright bold colours to catch your attention. Use of typography is a common factor in corporate branding as it shows a logo name or first letter, such as the Volkswagen logo. It shows a "V" and a "W" in the logo

As the work is used to try and convey a product, they need to be eye catching and understandable. Colours and typography are the main factors as they are easily read and understood. Use of shapes and objects are commonly used too. With Shell using an oyster shell shape and Apple using a bitten apple shape.
The main image is either a letter or a shape, as it is clear what the logo or advertisement could be.
